Crowns

Over time our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, discoloration, erosion and breaking. If you feel your smile isn’t what it once was, crowns can help you recover your smile. When a tooth has a large area of decay, weakened or develop crack lilnes, a filling or bonding is not enough to provide strength.  A crown is a better option.

The process of having a crown placed takes 1-2 visits. On the first visit the tooth is prepared by removing decay if any, and reshaping the tooth to fit the crown. You will be given a local anesthetic to provide comfort and no pain. Once the tooth has been reshaped to fit a crown, digital impression will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth. This image will be sent via computer to a milling machine where the crown is made. Before leaving, we will fit you with a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready.

The crown takes about 1-2 weeks to be returned to us. At this time you will have another appointment to place and fit the permanent crown. The area will be numbed with local anesthesia and the crown will be placed using a cement to ensure the tooth sets. When you look in the mirror, you will see your old smile back.

Crowns can last you many years. You should care for it as you would any of your other teeth with regular brushing and flossing. Call us today if you would like to learn more about how crowns can help restore your smile.

Porcelain finished crowns are best for natural looking teeth. They are made to match the shade of your teeth, allowing it to blend in with the rest of your teeth. Procelain crowns are more conservative too, this means that less enamel has to be shaped and the chemical bond between the crown and tooth is stronger.
