INLAYS AND ONLAYS

Inlays and Onlays are often referred to as partial crowns. They are a more conservative alternative treatment to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Depending on how much damaged or decayed tooth structure exsits and how much tooth structure is left, an inlay or onlay maybe a great option to repair it.

The difference between an inlay or an onlay is the amount of tooth structure needed to be repaired. If the tooth has no damage to any cusps and the damage is small, an inlay can simply repair the area. If your tooth has damage or decay reaching to a larger surface and involves the cusps of your tooth, an onlay would be the better option. The onlay will provide more strenght and support to your existing tooth.

Your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing the decay or damage areas, minor recontouring of the surrounding enamel may also be done. A mold of the tooth will be taken and sent to a dental lab to be fabricated. The inlay or onlay can be made in procelain, gold, or composite resin. Depending on which tooth will need the inlay or onlay, your dentist will decide which material will work best. It can take about 2-3 weeks for the dental labe to fabricate the inlay or onlay, in the mean time, a temporary inlay or onlay will be placed in the area needed. When the inlay or onlay arrives, you will be given an appointment to come in and have it cemented in.
